Fables for the Female Sex. [Edward Moore]. 3rd ed.

London : Printed by J. Lister, in Little-Boswell-Court, for T. Davies, in Russell-street, Covent-Garden, and J. Dodsley, in Pall-Mall, 1766.

Edward Moore (1712-1757) was born in Abingdon, Berkshire, the son of a dissenting Minister. He wrote plays and poetry, as well as the Fables, which were intended as ‘improving’ literature, and although popular, were rather damned by faint praise in his entry in the National Dictionary of Biography:

“His ‘Fables for the Female Sex’ (1744) have an excellent moral turn, but are somewhat deficient in the sprightliness which is especially demanded in that species of composition

This third edition (the first edition was 1744) has a frontispiece and 16 engraved plates by Grignion, Ravenet and others.
