Petite Bibliothèque la Jeunesse v. 3 L’Historien du jeune age

Paris, (Rue St Jacques) : [printed by A. Pinard for] Marcilly, 1836.-

12mo., 125 p. : ill., ; 8.2 cm.

Marcilly was a stationer and almanac seller, who from 1826 onwards produced boxes and cartons decorated with embossed papers. These ornate boxes contained small gifts such as miniature sewing and painting sets, suitable for a child’s Christmas or New Year’s gift. One such box contained six miniature books, half-bound in calf with gilt-edged pages and four plates to each volume. The volumes included accounts of travel and foreign shores; fables; cautionary tales and edifying spectacles and theatrical performances. The single volume held by the Priaulx Library is the historical volume from the set and contains tales ranging from Alexander the Great to the reign of Henri IV.
