At London : Printed [by W. Jaggard] for the company of Stationers, 1607 4oThis book is a collection of sermons preached by Hugh Latimer, Cambridge Doctor of Divinity and Bishop of Worcester 1535-9. A devout Roman Catholic, turned ardent Protestant, Hugh Latimer was instrumental in advancing the Protestantisation of the English Church under Edward VI. In 1553, after Queen Mary’s accession to the throne Latimer was arrested. In March 1554, he was taken to Oxford with Nicholas Ridley, (Bishop of Rochester1549-50; Bishop of London 1550) and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. On 16 October 1555, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley were burnt at the stake in Oxford. Within seven years of their execution the first collected edition of Hugh Latimer’s sermons had been printed by the London based printer John Day. Whilst this 1607 edition of the “Fruitfull Sermons” is held by at least twelve other libraries in the British Isles: the other locations are university and cathedral libraries or indeed the British Library itself. The Priaulx Library copy was owned by the Le Marchant family and there is both a Le Marchant bookplate inserted and a signature “J Le Marchant, 1812”, inscribed inside the front cover.
