Medals, Coins, Great seals, and other works of Thomas Simon : engraved and described by George Vertue. 2nd ed.

London : Printed by J. Nichols, printer to the Society of Antiquaries.

Thomas Simon was born in London in 1618, the son of Pierre Simon of Dieppe and Anne Germain of Guernsey. He also married a Guernsey girl, Elizabeth Fautrart, around 1645. Through his mother, Thomas was related to the Carey, de Beauvoir and Le Marchant families, amongst others. He studied engraving under Nicholas Briot and was appointed to the Royal Mint. After executing the Great Seal in 1645, he was promoted to be Chief Engraver to the Mints and Seals, producing several fine portraits of Cromwell. After the Restoration, he became Engraver of the King’s Seals, but is believed to have died of plague in 1665.

This volume of his work, engraved by the justly celebrated George Vertue, is a lavishly illustrated and informative quarto volume. This second edition of 1780 followed the first edition of 1753. There are several copies in academic libraries in the UK, including one in the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum
