Tuesday 25th November
 Lights, Buoys and Beacons

Platte Fougere, Lower Heads, Rousse, all known to us as beacons for mariners.  But what about the more local seamarks?  The poles in Grande Havre, the white painted rocks at Bordeaux, the beacons on the way to Herm, these are much more local and are inextricably entwined in local businesses, prosperity and leisure.  One was even erected courtesy of horse race winnings, and they all have an association with disasters, some real, some averted.

Technology is part of their history, be it signal fires, semaphores or LED lights, and Platte Fougere was a world-first, cutting-edge technology in 1910.

Peter Gill, our ex-harbour master, Master Mariner and a fount of knowledge about all things marine, will be presenting our next talk, and we’re certain, it will be fascinating.
